Braun is one of the leading brands of hair grooming items including razors, trimmers and shavers. This particular product is a bit different than most of the other things you’ll find on our website, because it’s specifically meant to be used for precision trimming of your beard, mustache and sideburns.
The Cruzer 6 High Definition Precision Trimmer is a basic tool that doesn’t fool around with too many options. On the one hand, that’s good, because it’s not trying too hard (and therefore falling into the trap of doing too many things). On the other hand, it can be an issue, because you only get 2 lengths of guide combs.
The actual cutting edge is very small, able to deliver very tight lines and edges. As mentioned just a moment ago, it comes with 2 guide combs in the following sizes:
- 5mm / 1/5″
- 8mm / 1/3″
This is fine if you’ve got a decent length beard, but will do you no good if you’re looking for a short stubble. You will want to make sure you know how long your beard is before buying this, or else just trust that one of the two sizes will work for you.
You can, of course, use this without any of the guide combs, and that might be exactly what you’re looking to do. It gives a very close shave with it’s small head, so you’ll be able to use it to get a very straight edge on your sideburns, trim your goatee perfectly, or create intricate styles if that’s the sort of thing you’re in to.
One of the good things about these attachments is that they’re very easy to get on and off, so there’s no messing about, and no real chance of breaking them unless you’re really unlucky. They’re fairly sturdy. The Cruzer 6 High Definition also comes with a plastic cap to protect the razor when you haven’t got a guide comb attached, and you aren’t using the device.
This unit is about the size of a pen, and is very easy to hold in your hand and maneuver. The size also makes it a great companion for the travelling man who wants to keep his beard looking good while he’s away, without packing a full trimmer.
Using only a AAA battery that is very easy to change, this will actually give you plenty of run time. There are cases when the battery will be vibrated out of it’s casing, which will stop the machine from working, so be aware that the battery might not be held very tightly. This is not a universal complaint, but some users of the product have had this problem. Note that the battery is included in the box, and it’s a Duracell.
Cleaning is a cinch with this Braun trimmer. The trimming head can handle being under water, so unclip it, rinse it off in the sink if you need to get excess hairs off or just give it a clean now and then. The relevant pieces come apart easily enough that you should never have trouble with too many hairs getting stuck where they shouldn’t be.
Now, when you’re actually using the unit, you must be careful to do so properly.
There are reports by some users of the trimmer that it can’t cut through hair and that it just pulls. Just so you’re aware of what real users are saying, it’s important that you know this. There’s certainly a risk here.
However, as noted above, this trimmer isn’t for everyone, considering it has only 2 length options and is for precision styling. If you have a beard that is just a little bit over 5mm or 8mm and needs a regular trim, this should do the trick. If you have very short stubble (a day or two, perhaps), and you need to do some edging work, this should be find.
What might get you into trouble is if you have a thick, long beard and you try to trim it to size with this. The fact of the matter is that it’s very small, has a very shallow blade, and is run by a AAA battery. If you have sky-high expectations after those facts, you’ll need to check yourself here. It’s not a hedge trimmer, it’s a precision tool meant to help you stay clean and tight when used regularly and correctly.
Additionally, looking through the actual manual that you get with the unit, you’ll notice that on Page 2, Box C, they show you how to hold the unit when shaving. Trim against the grain, pull your face taut with your hand for best results, and hold it on a 45 degree angle to your skin, as shown in the manual, which you can see here.
If you’ve got realistic expectations, you should find this will do the trick to keep your beard, mustache, sideburns and even eyebrows relatively clean and tidy.
It comes with a 2 year limited warranty, which is also visible in the manual we linked to above.
Best of all, this unit can typically be found online at the likes of Amazon, for example, for under $10.
The Braun Cruzer 6 High Definition Precision Trimmer is not meant to be a full-beard trimmer that you use daily to remove a full beard. You have to be careful to use it properly, by going against the grain, slowly, pulling your face taut, and shaving at a 45 degree angle. But, if you’re looking for precision and your beard length falls within an acceptable margin (close enough to the guide combs), this should do the trick when it comes to keeping your edges neat and tidy.
Although a good investment for the man that wants to maintain a unique beard style, its best used alongside hair trimmers that can easily manage shaving beards to desired lengths (why not check out the more robust Braun Cruzer 6 Beard & Head Trimmer to use alongside this?).
