While Panasonic is well known for it’s electronics line up, including TVs and Blu-ray players, they boast a fairly wide selection of personal care and grooming products for men. From electric shavers to nose hair trimmers, Panasonic puts together a solid product.
The ER-CA35-K might not have an exciting, marketable name, but this unit beats expectations on nearly all counts.
The features are very handy and range from useful during travel to easy to clean. Furthermore, it is not gimmicky, but actually performs well when used properly on the head or beard.
First of all, you’ll never need to adjust the blade. It is a Stainless Steel Hypo-Allergenic blade that Panasonic calls “high performance”. Owners of the Panasonic say it lives up to it’s name, with few reports of pulling hairs and a lot of praise for the quality of the blade. This is incredibly important, because a trimmer could have all the bells and whistles in the world, but if it doesn’t cut hair well, it’s completely useless. Luckily if you get this model, you don’t have to worry about that.
This unit has the longest length available out of any of the clippers we have seen. It’s 40mm maximum cutting length means that even if you’ve got a longer than average beard, you’ll still be able to maintain it without additional tools such as a comb or scissors.
It’s important to note that while the top cutting setting is very long, there are only 7 length options in total to get you from 40mm all the way down to 3mm. This means that there aren’t actually many options that are close to one another, and you might not be able to find exactly the length you were looking for. This may not be a problem for you, but it is important to note that just because the Panasonic allows you to groom a longer beard doesn’t mean it has a wider range of lengths from which to choose.
Each comb attachment is more than one size, so the trimmer actually comes with 3 combs:
- 1/8″ / 1/4″ (3/6mm)
- 3/8″ / 1/2″ (9/12mm)
- .8″ / 1.2″ / 1.6″ (20/30/40mm)
This trimmer is made unique by it’s ability to operate on 100v to 240v, making it ideal if you travel internationally with any frequency.
While designed with overseas travel in mind, this trimmer does not come with a case nor a bag to store it in. It’s easy enough to find something to hold the trimmer and it’s attachments, but for something that is supposed to be traveled with, this is a let down not to have one included.
This unit is charged with a cord and can operate cordless for about 40 minutes on an 8 hour charge, which puts it roughly in the middle of the pack in terms of holding a charge and actual charge time.
You get a cleaning brush and blade oil with your purchase, but Panasonic says you can clean your ER-CA35-K by running it under water. Do not do this while it’s plugged in and don’t get the entire thing wet, but putting the blades under the water should get most of the hair out and keep it clean. If that doesn’t quite work and you have a few hairs stuck in the blades and left behind (which is fairly common – sometimes those hairs are just stuck and the water pressure isn’t enough to dislodge them), the cleaning brush is a good standard sturdy bristled brush that will finish the job.
While I wouldn’t call this an All In One unit, because it doesn’t have detailing attachments or nose/ear hair trimmers, both Panasonic and actual users claim that it is a useful full-body tool and successfully grooms areas other than the head and face, which might make it more versatile for you.
Price is at the mid-high range of the scale, but owners of the unit have it at a 4.2 star out of 5 star rating on Amazon.com, with more than half of those ratings being a perfect 5 out of 5 star – a very important metric when deciding whether to purchase a trimmer. The better the ratio of 5 star reviews, the more likely it is that you’ll be getting a great trimmer.
