Philips Norelco BG2040 BodyGroom Pro Beard Trimmer Review

The Philips Norelco BG2040 BodyGroom Pro is a serious All In One beard trimmer and ‘body groomer’.

The BodyGroom Pro is a double edged sword. On one end, you’ve got a beard trimmer with 5 built-in length settings and on the other you’ve got a foil shaver with two pre-trimmers. This means you’ll be able to trim your beard to an acceptable length and use the same tool for getting a very smooth, very close to the skin shave when shaping your beard or grooming the rest of your body. Philips says this works great all over your body if your grooming needs extend south of your neck.

At first glance this is a great tool. It’s a bit pricey compared to comparable trimmers, at nearly $70, but it’s sleek, it’s sharp, and it’s incredibly useful.

Just to get this out of the way – the problem we find with a lot of All In One trimmers is that the manufacturer sacrifices either quality or performance to jam more features into a unit. While the BG2040 is a slick tool, only having 5 length settings on the trimmer is a tough pill to swallow. Sure, you might only use one setting, but the point is that to be useful to more men, you need a wide range of sizes with very small increments. This way more people will be able to use the product because all beard preferences are different.

The actual lengths are as follows:

  • 1 = 3mm (1/8 inch)
  • 2 = 5mm (3/16 inch)
  • 3 = 7mm (9/32 inch)
  • 4 = 9mm (3/8 inch)
  • 5 = 11mm (7/16 inch)

To be fair, it is a decent range and 2mm increments are not enormous. Plus, the guide comb is removable, so you can trim, edge, and do detail work with the ‘bare blades’, so to speak. The blades themselves are self-sharpening and maintenance free.

The pivoting head of the foil shaver sits between two pre-trimmers, which give the hair a bit of a trim before the main shaver gets to it, which allows for a more accurate and clean shave, but also prevents pulls and tugs. Owners of the Philips talk about it’s amazing usefulness as a full body groomer, and how the combination of the trimmer with this “3-D” (as they call it) foil shaver keeps them smooth and trim in all the ways you’d want.

This Philips is water resistant, so you can use it in the shower as long as you don’t hold it under the water for extended periods of time. This element just adds another layer to the very versatile BG2040 that makes it a pretty cool unit.

Putting it at the top of the pack amongst nearly all of it’s competitors, the BodyGroom Pro has a minuscule 1 hour charging time that delivers 50 minutes of shave time. That’s an excellent ratio. Some users noted that the battery holds a charge noticeably less when you approach the 2 year mark, but that doesn’t seem to significantly impact performance.

Speaking of 2 years, you’ll be covered for 24 months by warranty if anything goes wrong with your beard trimmer.

A small thing that helps give this trimmer an edge is the fact that it’s got an LED light that indicates when it’s charged and when it’s nearing the end of its charge.

This is one of the most popular beard trimmers on Amazon.com. It sits among the top 5 best sellers in both the Personal Groomers and Trimmers & Clippers categories. It’s got roughly 800 reviews, comes in at a 4 out of 5 star rating, and over 50% of it’s reviews are perfect 5 out of 5 stars.

While I have some hesitations about the general usefulness being compromised by adding too many features, it’s safe to say that in general, and for most people, this is one heck of a tool, and is a really good multi-purpose All In One grooming trimmer.
