Wahl is one of the leading brands in the grooming industry. The company has been at the forefront when it comes to creating products that focus on innovation and satisfying the individual customer’s needs. This brand boasts a huge portfolio of grooming products. Among these is the Wahl 5537-1801 Cordless Battery Operated Beard Trimmer with Bonus Ear, Nose and Brow Trimmer.
This is what I like to call a Bargain Trimmer, because it’s got a very low price and it’s actually usable. We don’t dig cheap things that don’t work, but we do dig things that do what they’re supposed to do without breaking the bank.
This unit typically goes for under $10 on Amazon.com.
Yes, $10. And it’s not just a beard trimmer. It comes with a nose/ear trimmer, too. And attachments. And a base. And it’s new, not used. We could hardly believe it. You might be sold already, but let’s just make sure it’s worth dropping a tenner on it.
The Wahl 5537-1801 Cordless Battery Operated Beard Trimmer features high carbon steel blades. These have been proven to be more effective and durable than the standard stainless steel blade. These blades are ground rather than stamped to ensure that they don’t wear down quickly. Users won’t have to replace the blades for years – can you believe that something you can get for under 10 bucks might not need parts replaced for more than a week? Incredible.
The 5537 is also watertight, so you can use it in or out of the shower, and rinse it under water to clean it. Again, very cool feature for this inexpensive trimmer.
The unit comes with a five position guide. This enables users to adjust trimming length easily, ensuring an even shave (so you hope). The five position guide is also effective for different trim lengths including stubble, medium and long beards.
In addition to the 5 position guide, the kit also comes with 3 standard guide combs for 1/16, 1/8 and 3/16 inch trim lengths. This puts it on the lower end of versatility, because other trimmers offer a wider range of lengths, but the fact that you get any options is pretty cool for this price.
Just a note that Wahl’s inexpensive trimmers are usually great machines but their attachments are notoriously bad. Just be aware that like the Groomsman series, this unit won’t give you the best trim when using one of the guide combs. It might pull a bit on thicker beards and it’s certainly not a comfortable shave.
In the package, you’ll get the actual beard trimmer itself, the additional ear/nose/brow trimmer, your five-position guide, 1/16, 1/8, and 3/16-inch guide combs, a blade guard, a mustache comb, a cleaning brush, blade oil for maintenance, a storage base, and, of course, instructions.
The Wahl 5537-1801 kit also includes a bonus ear, nose and brow trimmer, as you could probably guess from the long name of the unit. It is a handy tool for cleaning up any errant nose hairs or ear hairs that are unsightly and annoying. While you can get better dedicated nose hair trimmers as we discuss here, this isn’t a bad addition to your beard trimming kit. The bonus trimmer is battery operated (one AA battery), just like the main trimmer, so no need to recharge or worry about cords.
The unit comes in a lightweight ergonomic design. This makes it easy to use and store. Like other Wahls, it’s got a fairly small blade width, so it’s easier to use for edging, getting into tight areas, and will be better for getting more of your beard more easily, because it’ll form to your face better. Sometimes if a beard trimmer is too wide, it won’t have the ability to give you a great shave because the wide area won’t get into all the contours of your face. Naturally, it’ll take more work to get all of your facial hair, but you’ll typically find it’s worth it to have the smaller width.
As a battery powered unit, it’s not rechargeable, so there are no cords or charge times to worry about. This is good and bad, depending on your point of view.
Having only a battery means no waiting for the unit to recharge for hours, and it means you won’t have to worry about ever plugging it in or dealing with a cord.
On the other side, the battery life isn’t great, so if you use it regularly, you’ll probably be looking at a new battery every 2-4 weeks, depending on length of usage and how thick your beard is. This actually pushes the cost of the unit up, over its life, which is one of the reasons why it is so inexpensive. It takes two AA batteries, so remember to factor that cost in when deciding whether to purchase this unit.
To top it all off, Wahl offers a 2 year warranty.
Overall, the Wahl 5537-1801 Cordless Battery Operated Beard Trimmer with Bonus Ear, Nose and Brow Trimmer kit provides an all in one solution for facial hair grooming. Its compact design and affordability make this trimmer a good investment especially for the frequent traveler (just don’t forget to take battery cost into account!).
